Q. Can I use my own Horses hair to make a piece of jewellery?
A. Yes, all of the pieces on the website can be made with your horses hair. The hair will need to meet the minimum requirements for length etc.
Q. How much hair is required for a Bracelet, Tassels or Necklaces?
A. I will require about the thickness of your index finger and a minimum length of 40cm, (however the longer the better) of TAIL hair for most bracelets. The length of the tail hair is important so the longer the better. Please secure the hair with a rubber band or similar.
Customers will have their unused hair returned with the order.
Q. How much hair is required for a Pendant, Ring, Bookmark or Memory Locket?
A. For the Pendants I will require about the thickness of your little finger and a min length of 15cm (however, the longer the hair the better) For the Ring 40cm and for the Memory Lockets and Bookmarks 30cm. Please secure the hair with a rubber band or similar.
Customers will have their unused hair returned with the order.
Q. How do I work out my bracelet measurement? Why not a wrist measurement?
As everyone likes to wear their bracelets differently we therefore ask that a bracelet measurement be sent instead of a wrist measurement. Some people like to wear their bracelets with a loose fit whereas some people like a tighter fit. Your bracelet is custom made to be your perfect fit.
Wrap a measuring tape around your wrist where you would ideally like your bracelet to sit, then extend the tape to where it is a comfortable fit for you and that will be your bracelet measurement. Alternatively if you do not have a measuring tape you can use a piece of string or similar to wrap around your wrist, then after you have worked out the fit that is comfortable for you, lay the string flat and measure its length with a ruler etc.
Customers must ensure the bracelet measurement ( NOT a wrist measurement) is accurate. This measurement will be the inner circumference of your bracelet. Consequently, Mane Attraction – Custom Horse Hair Jewellery will except no responsibility if your piece is too big or too small.
Q. What is the difference between Mane hair and Tail Hair?
A. Mane hair is often quite thin, short and fragile. A braid made from mane hair, consequently will not hold as strongly together like a braid made from tail hair.
Furthermore, if using mane hair, braids will require double the amount of hair. Mane hair is unsuitable on its own for bracelets.
The mane hair coupled with and mixed with tail hair will result in added strength for bracelets, customers must ensure it will be the required length. Our range of Lockets and Pendants are perfect for customers with only mane hair.
Tail hair is thick and very strong therefore making it the ideal hair to use for jewellery.
Q. The piece I am trying to order is not available, why?
A. From time to time some pieces will become unavailable as we may be out of stock of some components to make that piece. We do our best to keep our stock levels high but at peak times such as Christmas, Valentines Day or Mothers Day we may run out while we wait for deliveries. Usually this is only for a short time so check back regularly.
How to take a horse tail hair trimming.
Trimmings should ideally be about the thickness of your index finger unless otherwise instructed (thickness should be measured at the bottom of your trimming not the top, as the top contains a lot of shorter hairs that may be unusable) . It should also be a minimum length of 35cm in length, but the longer the better
- Brush through the tail to remove any knots, debris etc
- Pull up the shorter hairs and put them in a ponytail out of the way
- Lift up the tail by holding the end of the tailbone
- Take a section of hair from the underside of the tail, cut with scissors in a downward motion (for safety reasons)
- Place a tight rubber band around it
How to Prepare your hair before posting
Customers must wash all hair prior to posting!
If you are unable to wash the hair a washing service is provided for a fee, please ensure you have selected this service before checkout. Click here for the Washing Service

Care Information – Sterling Silver Pieces
(This guide does not cover Mane Attraction’s Sterling Silver exclusively and is intended to be a general guide in the care and maintenance of Sterling Silver Jewellery).
All Sterling Silver and Gold metal is soft and malleable by nature, this is not a product fault.
Mane Attraction will not be held responsible for any damage (Dents, Bends, Scratches, Breakages etc) made by you, to any of our Sterling Silver or Gold pieces.
Sterling Silver is a malleable (soft) metal; therefore be gentle with Bracelets, Pendants, Earring Posts, Clasps etc as they can bend, break or scratch with surprisingly little force.
Sterling Silver may tarnish over time. Tarnishing or discoloration can usually be removed by careful use of a good quality jewellery cleaning cloth.
Polishing: Polishing your Sterling Silver works well when the tarnishing is not too severe.
Please keep in mind that silver is relatively soft and may become scratched easily. You can use a special silver cloth to polish your items, but a lint-free cloth, microfiber, or other soft nonabrasive cloth will do. Do not use paper towels or tissues to polish your jewellery as they contain fibers that can scratch the silver.
When polishing, use long back-and-forth motions that mirror the grain of the silver. Avoid rubbing in circles, as this will magnify any tiny scratches. Also, change to a different section of your cloth frequently to avoid placing tarnish back on the silver.
Clean frequently: Clean your silver jewellery often, especially after use. Prompt cleaning is especially important when the silver jewellery has been exposed to humidity, certain foods or products containing sulfur, or which are acidic or salty.
Avoid Corrosion: To avoid corrosion, please keep your Sterling Silver Jewellery away from:
- Household chemicals
- Chlorinated or Salt water
- Substances containing sulfur (latex, wool, eggs, mustard, etc.)
- Direct sunlight
Storage: Store clean, dry jewelry in a dry airtight container, or a closed airtight bag with anti-tarnish strips is a great preventative measure. Please don’t store multiple jewelry pieces in the same bag: silver is a soft metal, so the individual pieces can scratch or damage each other.
Bracelets etc should be kept unclasped or unhooked to prevent scratching as well. If you can’t use plastic bags or containers, try to make sure that the storage area has low humidity. You can also place a piece of chalk, a packet of activated charcoal, or a container of silica gel in the storage area to minimize tarnish.
Sterling Silver is a softer material that is susceptible to bending and scratches and should be treated with extra care.
